Regina's summer is beautiful: the greenery creates shades, the climate is cool. In the lawn encircled campus of University of Regina, came the more than 50 students from elementary and middle school in Regina city to participate in the “Chinese Culture Summer Camp 2013”. This year’s summer camp has absorbed the merit of the first summer camp in 2012, and made a bold attempt in activity arrangement towards richer curriculum content and more splendid demonstration. Instructors of Confucius Institute, according to their expertise, offered the courses of lantern making, Peking Opera face makeup, elementary Chinese, martial arts, cucurbit flute, dumpling making, calligraphy and drawing, Chinese song singing, Chinese Weiqi, poetry reading, paper-cut, ping-pong ball, kite DIY and flight. These activities triggered an enormous interest of the elementary and middle school students on Chinese language and culture.
The Confucius Institute at the University of Regina not only provided outstanding instructors of pedagogy, calligraphy, fine arts, music, and martial arts for the summer camp, but also arranged a reasonable number of Chinese college student volunteers for support. The design of small class and participation of enthusiastic volunteers increased the opportunity of two-way communications between the kids and the Chinese volunteers, guaranteed safeties of each camp activity under the circumstance of broad outdoor areas, which leads to more fun. Not only the Chinese culture summer camp enabled the students to gain knowledge about China at a joyful atmosphere, also improved their parent’s understanding about China, and stimulated their enthusiasm to travel in China. The show performance of summer camp attracted many parents to participate. The Canadian student's recital on Chinese ancient poetry with English interpretation, the piano accompaniment chorus of Chinese song has received warm applauses. One parent after the performance said: “The summer camp is awesome, the camp photo album you gave me, and the pictures that I have taken today will be my daughter’s treasure”. Another parent said that:“China's Jiaozi is delicious, my son brought home several, he learned to be filial to me and his mother, I planned to let him come again in the next year”.
