The 52nd Annual “Mosaic Multi-cultural Festival"

From May 30th to June 1st, 2019, the 52nd Annual “Mosaic Multi-cultural Festival" was held in Regina.  The Confucius Institute at the University of Regina in coordination with the Regina Canadian Chinese Association (RCCA) co-hosted the Mosaic Chinese Pavilion brought a series of cultural activities for the local community.

Mr. Zhenting Gao, the Deputy Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Calgary, Mr. Dave Button, the Vice-president of University of Regina and the Broad Chair of Confucius Institute at the University of Regina and Mr. Nish Prasad, the Vice President of Regina Multi-culture Council respectively attended and brought their greetings to the grand events.  Mr. Gao said that the Chinese culture is an essential part of globe culture, the Chinese community and Association should significantly consider a merge to be better in diversifying culture in the future. Mr. Dave Button, on behalf of the university, congratulated the Chinese Pavilion held at the university, and he is particularly grateful to the Confucius Institute and the local community for their cooperation in bringing the distinctive Chinese cultural characteristics of the university and the Regina. Mr. Nish also showed the appreciation to the Regina Canadian Chinese Association and Confucius Institute for their great contribution to Saskatchewan.

The theme of the Chinese Pavilion this year was “Solar Terms” derived from the Chinese lunar calendar. The Confucius Institute displayed the paper-cutting exhibition provided by Wanchun Primary School in Sichuan, China, entitled "Twenty-four Solar Terms". The goers were amazed at the wisdom of Chinese ancestors after learning "the twenty-four solar terms", the so-called "The Fifth invention of China." More so, Childlike playfulness reflected in the design of the paper-cuts was an attraction among young visitors. Furthermore, the experiencing of four-season flower tea also show the spirit of Chinese culture that depicts the harmonious coexistence between nature and human being. Festival-goers of all ages enjoyed further coming to the Chinese Pavilion by experiencing various activities such as paper-cutting, folding fan, dough-figuring and video presentation.

During the three days events, the Confucius Institute, the Chinese Wushu School, the “Saskatchewan Red Leaf” Art Troupe, and various Chinese art groups presented their best performances, including folk music, chorus, opera, dance, T’aichi, and a fashion show. There were nearly 5000 visitors to the Chinese Pavilion. The Honorable Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, Canada, visited the Pavilion and had fun experiencing and learning Chinese culture.
