~~On May 5th, 2019, the Confucius Institute at the University of Regina hosted a successful Chinese Kung Fu & Dance Performance, wherein the performers are the Martial Arts Group of Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT), the Dance Group of the Confucius Institute at the University of Saskatchewan (USCI) and the Dance Group of the Confucius Institute at the University of Regina (URCI). With programs featured in martial arts and folk dance, the excellent performers have composed an appealing “Song of Youth” for the local people in Regina.
The Martial Arts Group of BIT is a high-level athletic and performance group of students that, over the years, have had won many championships in the national martial arts competitions. They are proficient in a variety of martial arts forms, such as Chinese boxing, swords, spears, cudgels, Tai Chi Fan, etc. The Group has had a lot of experiences in professional competitions and performances. Their achievements in martial arts competitions and performances have been widely recognized and appreciated.
Meanwhile, the Dance Groups have over 20 members each, wherein USCI established their group in 2014 and URCI has established theirs three years ago. Both Dance Groups invite professional dance instructors to provide each member with a wealth of theoretical knowledge and practical performance.
As successors and promoters of the Chinese folk dance, the two Dance Groups have rich experiences of participating in large-scale performances. Their stage performance style is fresh and elegant, with distinctive characteristics.
When martial arts meets dance, and when masculinity meets femininity, then what kind of collision and fusion will come out?
Along with the melodious music, a group of young dancer came on the stage and raised the curtain of the show with a beautiful and graceful folk dance named “To the Moon”. After that, the martial artists from the BIT enter the stage with a swift and powerful fist position presented the strength and charm of the Chinese Kungfu and instantly igniting the enthusiasm of the audience. In this two-hour show, the Chinese Kungfu programs such as the forceful nine-section whip, strong rivalry and the graceful Tai chi Fan are performed alternately with the lithe and exuberant traditional folk dance expressing the lifestyle of China’s ethnic minorities as well as songs specially reflecting the Chinese martial arts spirit. All these brilliant performances have presented an audio-visual feast for the audience.
On behalf of the University of Regina, the Vice-President, Dave Button, congratulated the organizer on the success of this performance. The Associate Vice-President (International), Livia Castellanos attended and expressed her enjoyment of the show. About 400 people watched the performance.
