The 2019 “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Speech Contest

On March 132019, the Confucius Institute at the University of Regina organized the annual “Chinese BridgeChinese Speech Contest in collaboration with the University of Regina’s Chinese Language Program. More than 40 people gathered in the university’s Global Learning Center to attend the contest.

Thirteen students took part in the beginner and intermediate categories of competition. Each contestant presented their own original speech. Some contestants shared their unforgettable experiences in visiting China and studying Chinese; some rapped to express their appreciation of their teachers; and others spoke about their personal lives and families. Each contestant showcased their skills and competency in the Chinese language, and shared with the audience their own understanding of Chinese culture. Furthermore, they expressed their passion for continuing their Chinese language studies.

Chinese professors from the Confucius Institute and the University of Regina formed the judging panel and evaluated the speeches.  In a tie for the first place at the intermediate level, Luke Smith presented a speech titled “My Experience about Leaning Chinese”, and Nina Koster presented a speech titled “My Language Plot”. The speech “Why I learn Chinese” by Graham Hanna took first place in the beginner level.
