As the year almost coming to an end, it is once again a time for Chinese learners of Confucius Institute at the University of Regina to showcase what they learned from the program. The series of Chinese showcase events are a synopsis of different programs done by Confucius Institute and are also a platform and opportunity for Chinese learners to present their achievements. This year, the series of Chinese showcase activities held by the Confucius Institute are in cooperation with various partners.
Activity 1: Exhibitions of Mini-Chinese Program in Primary Schools
This fall 2018, the Confucius Institute conducted a mini-Chinese Program in collaboration with five public and private primary schools in different cities and towns in Saskatchewan. The program benefitted more than 300 students by offering a variety of Chinese language courses and traditional cultural activities.
On the last day, the volunteer teachers of Confucius Institute did an exhibition of activities that they did with their students. The students presented Chinese ballads, martial arts, Chinese songs, and other shows. The students likewise displayed their dough-figuring, paper-cuts, Chinese calligraphy and ceramic works. The school teachers and students expressed their gratitude to the Confucius Institute for the excellent opportunity to learn Chinese and experience Chinese culture. Canada is a multi-cultural country, and it is a precious opportunity for the students, most especially who are from the rural schools to experience and understand Chinese culture.
Activity 2: Closing Ceremony of the Chinese Program
The joint venture between the Confucius Institute and the Chinese Program at the University of Regina provided various services that aim to promote Chinese language and culture, most especially to improve the learning of Chinese Major Students. The tutorial and library room of the Confucius Institute has been opened to the students all year round and provided a large number of one-on-one tutoring sessions. The Confucius Institute also develop various auxiliary courses for intensive reading courses to support students' learning and development. Many university students went to China for short-term visits or long-term exchanges through programs organized by the Confucius Institute. Some of these students took HSK examination and Chinese Bridge Competition through the platform offered by the Confucius Institute.
On November 23, a casual closing ceremony was held for the Chinese Major students. The students felt that they have a lot to look back on their Chinese learning process. Wherein, some students said that learning the Chinese language is a challenge, but it became easier because they could always get help from the volunteer teachers of Confucius Institute that the process become enjoyable.
Activity 3: “My Chinese Showcase” with Regina Chinese School
On December 16, the Confucius Institute held the annual event - "My Chinese Showcase” with Regina Chinese School, in which more than 100 people participated. The Confucius Institute's Dragon Dance team did a lively opening show and followed by a Bawu performance. The Regina Chinese School students displayed their excellent compositions and calligraphy works that showed their efforts in learning Chinese. Meanwhile, the Confucius Institute organized a variety of table activities such as puzzles guessing, dough-figuring, pot throwing, calligraphy, table tennis, paper-cutting and so on that were actively participated and enjoyed by students and parents.
Ms. Song, the principal of the Chinese Language School, said that Confucius Institute had provided tremendous human and material supports to Regina Chinese School every year. Specifically, the various organized activities by institute provided strong support for the students and parents of the non-profit public welfare school. More so, it made a vital contribution to the learning and inheritance of heritage languages by Canadian- Chinese students. This work of the Confucius Institute had significantly increased the strong cultural cohesion and sense of cultural belonging for the Chinese community in Regina. She expressed her heartfelt thanks for the work of the Confucius Institute over the years.
