The Chinese Kung Fu Camps and Club

~~From July to August of  2018, Confucius Institute at the University of Regina organized three ‘To be Jackie Chan’ Chinese Kung Fu Summer Camps and Club that focuses on Chinese Martial Arts to meet the demand of the local community to learn Wushu.   It is a project that stems from the success of the first Spring Camp held in this March. 12 kids ages from 9-13 years old participated in the summer camps and club. All the campers learned Shaolin Boxing, Shaolin stick and T’aichi Fan, some basic Chinese language and experienced a variety of Chinese featured activities that included Dough Figuring, Calligraphy, Shuttle Kicking, Rope Jumping, singing Chinese songs and so on. It was during this summer camp that the organizers of the Kung-Fu camp to introduce the Dragon Dance, much to the excitement of the campers. The campers showed keen interest to learn the dance and did a fantastic performance during the closing ceremony that won praises from the audience.
The Confucius Institute at the University of Regina started to offer Chinese Culture Camps for teenagers since 2012.  This year, it tried to develop Kung-fu theme based camps and clubs and were successful in organizing the event for four times. The camp instructor of the Confucius Institute is a professional master that hails from the Shaolin Martial Arts School in Songshan, China. All the campers and their parents gave a high commendation to the project. More so, commented the concept was a very positive attempt to let children learn some basic Chinese words and experience the Chinese culture by practising Chinese martial arts and cultural activities through play. They further expressed their interest to continue their martial arts journey with the Confucius Institute in the future.
