From April 2nd to April 8th, 2018, the Confucius Institute at the University Regina successfully organized the “To Be Jackie Chan” Chinese Kung-fu Spring Camp for elementary school students from the local community.
On April 2nd, 11 campers gathered at the University of Regina, anxiously waiting for the camp to open. This was the first time Confucius Institute organized a camp focused on Chinese martial arts. All of the campers experienced rich Chinese cultural activities during the five days. Together with language instructors from the Confucius Institute, the campers not only learned specific Chinese Kung-fu, such as Shaolin Boxing and Tai Chi Fan, but had the opportunity to learn useful Chinese language expressions (such as numbers, directions, body parts, animals, etc.). They also enjoyed many other Chinese cultural activities and entertainment, such as writing Chinese calligraphy , making Chinese weapons, outdoor hulahu, singing Chinese Kung-fu songs, and watching Chinese Kung-fu movies.
The Kung-fu theme based spring camp is an example of learning through playing, which in turn stimulates the interest of local community members in understanding and enjoying Chinese Martial Art culture such as Takenoti, Jianghu and Martial Arts Faction
