~~In Canada, May is the month when flowers begin to bloom and grass becomes green. From May 17th to June 15th, the 2017 “Chinese Cultural Activities Entering into Local Schools” program was conducted by the University of Regina’s Confucius Institute at Luther College High School and Coronation Park School successively. In total, more than 600 students, from 6 to 18 years old, actively participated in Chinese traditional cultural activities.
On May 17, coinciding with the traditional Chinese Dragon Boat Festival, the Confucius Institute teachers were invited to Luther College High School to give a lecture introducing the culture and traditions surrounding the Chinese Dragon Boat Festival. “Zongzi”, tiger-head shoes, sachets, and other unique ethnic goods were showcased in the lecture, which attracted great interest among students and teachers. On May 23 and June 15, another two cultural experiential activities were held at the Coronation Park School. More than 200 students had fun making dumplings, writing Chinese calligraphy, doing Chinese knotting, coloring Beijing opera masks, and learning Chinese paper-cutting.
The “Chinese Cultural Activities Entering into Local Schools” program, which was designed to provide more opportunity for local students and teachers to taste the beauty of traditional Chinese culture, has received more and more interest from local schools since its implementation. It helps meet the increasing demands for local people to learn about and understand Chinese culture.
