From November 21 to 25th, the Confucius Institute at the University of Regina held “international education week 2016”, of which the main theme is “Rediscovering China”, to celebrate the fifth anniversary of Confucius Institute and 35th anniversary of ties between the U. of R. and Universities in China.
In the morning of November 21 the international education week begins in Global Learning Center at the U of R. Provost Thomas Chase presides over the opening ceremony. He reviewed the history, in the opening ceremony, of the relationship between the University of Regina and Chinese universities, emphasized the positive role of international education in developing the student’s international vision, and simultaneously appreciated the contribution of Confucius Institute on organizing this international education week. After the opening ceremony, the Confucius Institute invited Mr. William Wang, director of Greater China area, Saskatchewan Ministry of Economic Affairs, to make presentation “China---A Strong Economical Partner of Saskatchewan”.
In the morning of November 22nd, the lecture “China---A Hot Spot for Study Abroad”, attracted many undergraduate students. The Confucius Institute introduced Chinese universities that accept foreign students, and answered questions regarding admission application, credit transfer, and Confucius Institute scholarships. In the afternoon, well-known professors from Hunan University conducted two presentations for the university faculties and students. In the presentation “Main Features of China’s Traditional Architectural Art”, the associate dean, Professor Liu Su and Dr. Li Yuwei from Hunan University School of Architecture demonstrated lots of Chinese architecture pictures and their cultural connotation. The Chinese state-award winner, professor He Renke, the dean of Hunan University School of Industrial Design and the associate dean, Professor Ji Tie together made a presentation “New Channel Design and Social Innovation Project”, which demonstrated successful case of combining the cultural elements of minority people with industrial design, innovation and improving social and economical development.
In the afternoon of November 23rd, Dr. Rebecca Caines from the School of Media, Art, Performance at the U of R, and Professor Zheng Da from Central China Normal University jointly made a presentation “A Muse for Creativity and Art”.
In the evening, Confucius Institute held the “Chinese cooking showcase and competition” in the Riddell Centre. Admission tickets were sold out quickly as faculties and students rush to appreciate the Chinese cuisines and taste the delicacy. In addition to food and drink, the showcase also arranged video programme “A Bite of China” with the Chinese food material demonstration on site. The Confucius Institute art group has performed the traditional dance and the modern dance for two people. Vice President Dave Button, the Chairman of Confucius Institute Board preside the judge panel of cooking competition with full enthusiasm. The judges grade the foods according to the color, aroma, taste and shape, in a happy atmosphere. Finally, “Xinjiang Lamb Chops” and “Dancing Prawns” obtained the first prize of experienced group and non-experienced group respectively.
In addition, the international education week screened the Chinese movie, conducted the Confucius Institute open day and a week-long modern China photo exhibition.
