Mosaic, A Festival of Cultures, is a community-based and family-friendly event in Regina. The festival is a three-day event taking place on the first weekend of June. Regina has celebrated ethnic diversity and all of its wonders in every summer for over 48 years. The theme for Mosaic 2016, its 49th festival, is Three Days of Fun. There were 17 pavilions this year, including Austrian Edelweiss Pavilion, Balaton Hungarian Pavilion, Brazilian Pavilion, Caribbean Pavilion, Chinese Pavilion, Francophone Pavilion, German Pavilion, Hellenic Greek Pavilion, India Pavilion, Irish Pavilion, Italian Pavilion, Kyiv Ukrainian Pavilion, Miorita Romanian Pavilion, Philippine Pavilion, Poltava Ukrainian Pavilion, Punjab Pavilion, and Scottish Pavilion. A single passport allowed visitor access to all pavilions.
The Confucius Institute at the University of Regina, together with the Regina Canadian Chinese Association, co-hosted the Chinese Pavilion at the Riddell Centre at the University of Regina. Visitors tried delicious Chinese cuisine and drinks, such as Qingdao Beer. As well, they watched Tai chi, Peking Opera, and the stage performance by Chinese dancers wearing national costumes, while listening to Chinese music. In the hall of Riddell Centre, visitors also browsed arts and crafts at various exhibition tables in a relaxed pace. Some people gathered in front of a 61-inch screen, a Chinese culture experience system, to absorb information on history, culture, and tradition of China, various cities and tourist spots in China.
Dance School of Saskatchewan, Red Leaves Dance Performing Arts Group, and Confucius Institute all contributed their stage performance programs, which demonstrated the beauty of arts in costumes, dance, and music. Visitors to Chinese Pavilion enjoyed their colorful cultural experience in a joyful atmosphere. In three days, the Chinese pavilion observed over 8000 visitors who came to attend the cultural activities. The Chinese pavilion is very successful this year. The three-day carnival of Mosaic not only promotes tourism, but also increases intercultural awareness among the people in Regina.
